East West Rail | a disaster for harston

On 31 March 2021, East West Rail (EWR) released their preferred route options for the Bedford to Cambridge section of the line. The proximity to Harston and the scale of the proposed works have shocked us. We are working with the Parish Council and other concerned residents to keep you informed, and to submit a formal response by 9 June when the consultation closes.

The main EWR concerns for Harston are:

  • An elevated track of up to 12m above ground level from Chapel Hill, Haslingfield, to Rowley Hill/Newton Road, Harston – a visual, auditory and environmental blight.
  • The potential severing of the roads between Harston and Newton and Hauxton and Little Shelford, meaning more traffic on the A10 and London Road, and a 3x longer journey for Newton school children and others.
  • Diesel passenger and freight trains – meaning worse air quality, noise and environmental damage.
  • Years of disruption during construction with no benefit to Harston when complete.
A 12-metre-high embankment could encircle Harston bringing 24-hour noise, diesel fumes and huge visual impact
